Mr. Daniel David Caldwell, 88, of Hartwell, GA, husband of Faye Fulp Caldwell, died Saturday, December 12, 2009, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. He had one daughter, Luanne Caldwell Blankenship and son-in-law Buren, of Starkville, MS.
He was born August 27, 1921 in Haymakertown, Virginia, the youngest son among 13 children. He was much loved “Uncle Tiny” to many nieces and nephews and their children.
Mr. Caldwell served in the US Marine Corps in World War II (Pacific Theater) and the Korean War, where he earned a Purple Heart. He was an electrical engineer and served his career with the US Army Corps of Engineers. He retired as the Superintendent of the Hartwell Dam and Powerhouse.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hartwell, where he served as a deacon and elder. Over the years, he was also a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the American Legion, the VFW, the Sons of the Confederacy, and the Rotary Club. He was a recipient of the Rotary Citizen of the Year Award.
Mr. Caldwell was an avid gardener who loved to share his bounty with friends in the community. He enjoyed watching and feeding the birds. He was an animal lover who rescued many abandoned dogs. For many years, he took his dog for pet therapy visits to nursing homes. Helping other people gave him a special joy. Even when faced with health challenges, he always said he had a blessed life.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 15, 4:00 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Stephen Nelms officiating. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorials may be given to the charity of one’s choice.
