Mr. James "Jim" Philip Martin Jr.

December 19, 1933 - January 1, 2022

James (Jim) Philip Martin passed away on January 1, 2022. He was born in Athens, GA on December 19, 1933. Jim received a Journalism degree from the University of Georgia and later a Doctor of Law degree from Woodrow Wilson College of Law. He served three years in the U.S. Army. After receiving his degree, he became the editor of TRUX magazine for the Georgia Motor Trucking Association in Atlanta. In 1965 Jim accepted a position with the Georgia Society of CPA’s where he served faithfully for 35 years and retired as the Executive Director in 2000. After retirement, he and his wife, Carolyn, moved to Lake Hartwell where they lived for 21 years. In 2005, Jim was appointed to the Georgia State Board of Accountancy by Governor Nathan Deal. While in Hartwell, Jim organized a community garden, and started a beautification project referred to as the Four Corners Project. He and Carolyn were married for 39 years. They have four children and eight grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; children, Melissa Martin, Michael (Christina) Martin, Kelly (Craig) Kirkland, and Keri (Mark) Cochran, eight grandchildren, and sister, Beckie (Paul) Fairchild. A memorial service celebrating the life of Mr. Jim Martin will be held Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hartwell First United Methodist Church, 200 East Howell Street, Hartwell, Georgia 30643 with Dr. R. Allen Stewart officiating and a reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Hartwell Community Garden c/o Mr. Frank Spenger, 1814 Lightwood Road, Hartwell, GA 30643 or Hartwell First United Methodist Church, 200 East Howell Street, Hartwell, Georgia 30643. The Strickland Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Hartwell is in charge of all arrangements.
