Alton Douglas Bennett, 87, passed away July 14, 2016 at Suncoast Hospice in Palm Harbor, Florida.Alton is the son of the late John Buell Bennett and Elizabeth Moss Bennett of Bowersville, Ga.He was born in Bowersville on September 9, 1928.He lived most of his life in Lavonia.He is also a US Army veteran of the Korean War, though he served in Germany.He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Lavonia.He was retired chicken farmer who enjoyed crossword and other puzzles, watching the Atlanta Braves, people watching, and several television shows.
He is survived by a brother, Joe Bennett.Other survivors include son & daughter-in-law Keith and Holly Bennett of Clearwater, Florida, two grandsons Michael and his wife Ashley Bennett of Boston, Mass. and Thomas Bennett, also of Boston, Mass., and two great grandchildren (Marin Kelly Bennett – 3) and Isaac Douglas Bennett (1½).Isaac carries on the "middle" name tradition started with Alton to Keith, to Michael with the "Douglas".
A viewing will be held at the Strickland Funeral Home in Lavonia from 9:30 to 11:00 am on Saturday July 23 to be followed by a service in the Chapel with the Rev. John Forbes officiating, followed by a brief graveside service and burial at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Lavonia, Ga.In Lieu of flowers, the family would request donations be made either to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church or to the Suncoast Hospice Foundation at 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, Florida 33760-9962 in honor of Alton.
