Mr. Alton Floyd Minor, age 96, of Lavonia, GA died Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Emory University Hospital.
Born May 24, 1915, in Riverton, LA, he was the son of the late William Floyd Minor and Ethel (Slawson) Minor. He was graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, where he played with the ROTC Marching Band in FDR's first inaugural parade in 1932. He retired from Southern Bell, as a network planning engineer, after 41 years of service. Prior to moving to Lavonia, he was a member of Druid Hills Baptist Church, where he formerly served as deacon and Sunday School Teacher. Mr. Minor was a member of Lavonia First Baptist Church. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife: Ernestine (Broadaway) Minor, second wife: Ruth (Kay) Minor; and sister: Gladys Rankin.
He is survived by his daughter & son-in-law: Priscilla & James Gothard of Lavonia; son and daughter-in-law: Richard & Patricia Minor of Stone Mountain; step-children: Nancy & Bob Newcomb of Elk City, OK and William & Margaret White of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren: John & Elizabeth Gothard, Barry & Stacey Gothard, Karen & Jeff Madewell, and Keith Minor; and great-grandchildren: Richie & Angelica Minor, and Chaz, Zachary, & Kailey Gothard.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with Dr. Larry Finger and Rev. Richard Bielski officiating. Burial will follow in the Lavonia City Cemetery.The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. At other hours the family will be at the home of Priscilla & James Gothard.
