Obituary

Beverley Steel Livesay, age 94, of Hartwell, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and the caring staff at Brookdale in Hartwell, Georgia.  Born on September 28, 1930, she was the daughter of Thomas D. and Virginia K. Steel of Richmond, Virginia.

Beverley devoted her life to the service of her family, her church, and her community.  Growing up during the Depression and World War II did not make her cynical; instead, it gave her the motivation to be a positive influence in the world.  She was loved by everyone she met and always had something positive to say.  She rarely spoke a cross or negative word. Not only did she raise her five children during the turmoil of the sixties and seventies, she also took in many others in their time of need to help them get back on their feet.  They found refuge and encouragement in her peaceful family sanctuary.  She emphasized hard work with a good attitude. She had a way of bringing out the best in those around her and was a light to all who knew her.

Beverley Livesay was a member of St. Andrew's Church in Hartwell, Georgia. She has been an Episcopalian since she was baptized as an infant.  She grew up in Richmond, Virginia.  One of her best childhood memories occurred when she was 9 years old. She and her mother, along with some aunts and cousins, rode a train to New York City to attend the 1939 World's Fair, where she saw an architectural model of the proposed interstate highway system. When Beverley was 16, she enrolled in Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg where she majored in Economics.  She used this degree for a few years working for the state health department, but mostly served as a homemaker in the rearing of four boys and one daughter.  She was the original "Soccer Mom," driving the family station wagon to make sure all her children got to their swimming and track meets, and baseball, basketball, and football practices and games on time.  She also helped with the boy's paper routes and her teenage sons' pool cleaning business.  She volunteered for the local PTA, as a room mother, and as a Den Mother for the Cub Scout Troop. And, in her spare time, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She was always very active in serving others and encouraged her children to be as well.  When her children entered college, she worked at Berkmar High School and at Northlake Mall in order to help pay for tuition and expenses.

Bev's husband, Sherb, worked for NCR and his job moved the family three times in ten years: from Richmond, Virginia, to Carbondale, Illinois, to Birmingham, Alabama, to Lawrenceville, Georgia.  Beverley was a devoted member of the Episcopal churches in each of these cities.  She was a founding member at two Episcopal churches, and she faithfully served on the altar guild at each Parish.  She was the leader of the Altar Guild at St. Mary and St. Martha in Buford, Georgia, for many years, and also served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister.  She lived in the Atlanta area near Lawrenceville for over 40 years.  After her husband of nearly 60 years passed away, she moved to Flowery Branch and then to Hartwell where she lived with her daughter and nearby to two of her sons.

In addition to her parents, Beverley was preceded in death by her husband C.S. (Sherb) Livesay of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and her brother Thomas Steel, Jr. of Richmond, Virginia. She is survived by her sons Douglas Livesay (Pam) of Cumming, Georgia; William Livesay (Bettina) of Hartwell, Georgia; Steven Livesay (Alexis) of Hartwell, Georgia; Kenneth Livesay (Donna) of Birmingham, Alabama; and her daughter Amy Todd (Andy) of Hartwell, Georgia. Beverley, affectionately known has Nana, also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church on Saturday May 3, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. with Father Reid Hamilton officiating.  Interment will follow at Gwinnett Memorial Park Cemetery for the family in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
