Mrs. Beverly (Blount) Mixon Benfield, age 68, of Martin, died Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Stephens County Hospital.
Born October 6, 1945, in Sandersville, and raised in Wrightsville, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Bluford Blount and Golos (Chester) Blount. She retired as the Assistant Director for Parasitic Diseases Division from the Centers for Disease Control after 30 years of service. After retirement she moved to the Lavonia area and became very active in the Lavonia community. She was the past president of the Tugaloo Art Guild and the Lavonia Garden Club, as well as being a member of the Lavonia Women's Club, the Lavonia Bridge Club, and the Red Hat Society. She was a member of the Lavonia First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Jeff and Trudi Mixon; grandson: Colt Mixon; brother: Ben Blount, Jr.; and sister: Fay B. Hendricks. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husbands: Bobby E. Mixon and Cosby V. Benfield.
It was Mrs. Benfield's wishes to be cremated. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 26, 2014 at the Lavonia First Baptist Church with Dr. Larry Finger officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. A second service will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, September 29, 2014 at the chapel of A. S. Turner Funeral Home in Decatur, GA with Ken Duffie officiating. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. at A. S. Turner Funeral Home.
