Obituary

Mrs. Billie Alewine Thornton, 87, of 4994 Bowersville Hwy, Bowersville, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Friday, September 22, 2017 at The Gables at Cobb Village, Royston GA.

Born on August 19, 1930 in Bowersville GA she was the daughter of the late Arthur Blanton Alewine and Eulalar Carnes Alewine.Mrs. Thornton was retired from Hart County Health Department, where she was a clerk.Mrs. Thornton was voted Hart County Mother of the Year in 1981.She was also a devoted member of the Cross Roads Baptist Church of Hartwell, where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years, was a charter member of the prayer ministry, GA leader, Choir member, Anita Roper Circle and the Martha Bowers Prayer Group.

Survivors include her daughter: Wanda Davis and her husband Jeff of Lavonia; two sons: Lanny Thornton and his wife Margie of Bowersville and Barry Thornton and his wife Carole of Canon; five grandchildren: Meri Beth D. McNeill, Jo Anna Malcom, Josh Thornton, Rusty Thornton and Adam Thornton; five great-grandchildren: Luke Thornton, Lily Claire Thornton, John Davis McNeill, Duncan McNeill and Brody Thornton also survive.Mrs. Thornton was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 66 years: Homer A. Thornton; her son: Homer Ronald Thornton and a brother: Blanton "Sonny" Alewine

Funeral services will be Monday, September 25, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cross Roads Baptist Church with Rev. Sean Payne and Rev. Ben Coleman officiating.Burial will be in the Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ben Thornton officiating.The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Monday morning.

The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening.The family is at the home. Flowers optional, memorials may be made to the Cross Roads Baptist Church Family Life Center Fund, 3636 Lavonia Hwy, Hartwell GA 30643 or to Gideons International, Hart County Camp, PO Box 59, Hartwell GA 30643.
