Mr. Billy Glenn “Dad” Segars, 71, of Hartwell, Georgia passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on October 3, 2026.
Dad was born on February 22, 1955, in Royston, Georgia to the late Billy Edward Segars and the late Mildred White Whitaker and Charles Whitaker. A lifelong Hart County resident, he made his home in the Liberty Hill community for over 30 years.
A retired entrepreneur, Dad will perhaps be most fondly remembered throughout Hart County as the Owner and Operator of a little breakfast cafe tucked away in the forks of the road at Elberton Highway and Nancy Hart School Road. It was simply known as “Dad’s Biscuit Barn.” With his family by his side, Dad created a place that became a cherished part of his community. A gathering spot where a hot cup of coffee was as never-ending as the hunting and fishing tales shared throughout the dining room. For many, Dad’s Biscuit Barn was an unofficial breakfast club where the latest town news was exchanged long before the next edition of the Hartwell Sun hit the stands. The parking lot became a place to show off your new Harley, a prized classic car, or the latest trophy buck from the tailgate of a Chevrolet.
To Hart County, Dad will forever be remembered as one of the finest cathead biscuit makers the community has ever had. But to his family, he was much more than the man in the kitchen. He was Dad.
Dad had many pastimes throughout his life, but there was nothing he loved more than being outdoors. From a young age, he could be found horseback riding with his younger siblings. He spent most of his fall and winter seasons in the deer woods long before trophy bucks were as plentiful as they are now. Dad enjoyed building and driving any and all hotrods that had a bowtie on the grille and spent many of his nights in the red Georgia clay of the local dirt track while his cars chased the checkered flag. He is still known for his precise ability to tune a carburetor just by listening to it.
But out of all things outdoors, fishing held a special place in his heart. As a child, he and his brothers, along with their neighborhood friends, spent afternoons fishing for Horney heads and Crawfish in the Beaver swamps of Crossroads, now known as Skeeter Branch. Many summer family vacations took place at fish camp on the banks of Santee Cooper Lake. In retirement, he spent cool spring mornings with his oldest son fishing for Crappie at Coldwater Creek. Dad was a true outdoorsman, but more importantly, he was a man who knew what to share what he loved. His knowledge, stories, and love for the outdoors will live on not only through his children and grandchildren, but through every person that was fortunate enough to walk beside him to the next honey hole.
Left to cherish Dad’s memory, especially his uncanny sense of humor and his unmatched ability to wrangle an immense amount of grandchildren are his wife, Donna Wood Segars; his children and their spouses Billy Carroll “Baby” Segars and Kayla of Hartwell; Jason Segars and Audrey of Bowman, Ga; Jennifer Allen and Adam of Commerce, Ga; Samantha Varnes and Robert of Lavonia, Ga; and Breshia Porter of Hartwell. He is, also, survived by 20 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and his siblings Freddie Segars, Linda Dickerson, Mike Segars, and Mark Segars. Dad is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Debbie Beard.
The family will receive friends Monday, October 5, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell. Other times the family will be at the home.
