Mr. Carlton L. Godfrey, age 74, of Lavonia, died Sunday, September 18, 2011 at his home.
Born November 2, 1936, in Gainesville, GA, he was the son of the late Charlie Eugene Godfrey and Fannie Jane (West) Godfrey. He owned and operated Godfrey's IGA Grocery Store. Mr. Godfrey was a member of the Lavonia First Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-son: Sean Mouchet; grandson: Jamie Weaver; and sister: Ethel Toney.
He is survived by his wife: Linda (Phillips) Godfrey; daughters: Melissa Godfrey of Commerce and Erica Emory of Lavonia; daughter and son-in-law: Sherry & Aaron Gailey of Lavonia; sons and daughters-in-law: Kevin & Donna Godfrey of Lavonia and Jeff & Kathy Godfrey of Canon; step-daughter: Angela Mouchet; grandchildren: Emily & Ryan Jones, Marcus Godfrey, Heather Leaver, Jacob Godfrey, Clayton Godfrey, Abbygail Godfrey, Chris Alewine, Diana Weaver, and Lexie Carey; great-grandchildren: Madalyn Leaver and Leah Ivester; siblings: Claude Godfrey, Myrtle Evans, Harold Godfrey, Edith Collins, and Oscar Godfrey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the Lavonia First Baptist Church with Dr. Larry Finger, Rev. Richard Bielski, and Rev. Ronald Hinsonofficiating. The Bob Gillespie Sunday School Class will serve as honorary escort. In accordance with Mr. Godfrey's wishes, cremation will follow the service.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. At other hours the family will be at the home. Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to the Lavonia First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 47, Lavonia, GA 30553.
