Mrs. Carole Burroughs Spencer, 85, of Watkinsville, GA, formerly of Hartwell passed away Friday, February 27, 2026, peacefully at her home, with her son by her side. She was born on February 6, 1941, in Toccoa, GA to the late Agatha Whitlow Burroughs and J R Burroughs.
Mrs. Spencer was predeceased in death by her beloved husband James Elliott Spencer, Sr. (affectionately known as Jim). She is survived by her son: Wally Crump, stepson: James E Spencer, Jr (Jenny), step grand daughters and sons: Maryanne Schnell, (Kyle), Caroline Spencer and Elliott Spencer. Jim, her late husband, also had a daughter named Marjorie Spencer. Carole had a special relationship with and considered Laurie Skelton Tipton and Leigh Anne Lowe Landers like daughters, and they loved her like their own Mom.
Carole was also a “Mom” to many local kids and Georgia 4-Hers that she met thru Wally. Many referred to her as a southern fireball, and that she was! She treated all these “kids” as her own and left an indelible impression on them. Carole loved unconditionally and loved fiercely, and that love was reflected in everything she did for the community, the Church, for the Hartwell community and her family.
Carole worked for many years at the Hart EMC in various roles but retired as supervisor of the cash department. The EMC was more than a job, it was part of her family, and she is forever grateful for those friendships that she carried forward during the years
There will be a graveside service Saturday, March 28 at 11:00 AM at Nancy Hart Memorial Park and a special service at Highland Hills Village on Friday, March 27, the day before, at 2:00 PM for the residents of that community.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in the Spencer Family Name to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 579 Fairview Avenue, Hartwell, GA 30643.
The Strickland Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Hartwell is assisting the family with all of the arrangements.
