Mrs. Dair Barrett Smith, age 92, formerly of Lavonia, died Tuesday, May 20 at Budd Terrace at Wesley Woods, Atlanta.
Born May 23, 1915, she was the daughter of the late John Robert & Bessie Scarborough Barrett. She was an educator and a homemaker. Mrs. Smith founded the Lavonia United Methodist Church Alpha Center. She was a coordinator for the Golden Agers and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Lavonia United Methodist Church, where she served in many positions, including Sunday School teacher, choir member and active member of the United Methodist Women.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband: Loy Warwick Smith; sisters: Weir Almond, Gail Lewis, and Doris Love; and brother: Bron Barrett.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law: Joyce & Richard Hamilton of Lavonia; sons and daughters-in-law: Barrett & Barbara Smith of Pine Mountain and Bron & Frances Smith of Buford; sister: Silva Thais Raica of Westerville, OH; grandchildren: Andy & Michelle Hall, Marcy Smith & Ron Boyter, Courtney Poole, Heather & Ralph Powell, Allison & James Scott, and Jo Ann & Jason Schaus; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008 at the Lavonia United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom McElroy and the Rev. Dr. Shelia Bookout officiating. Burial will follow in Franklin Memorial Gardens – North.
The family will be at the home of Joyce & Richard Hamilton, and will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lavonia United Methodist Church Alpha Center, 25 Baker Street, Lavonia, GA 30553.
