Mr. Dewey Harvard Vollrath Sr., 84, of 214 Smith Street, Hartwell, GA, departed this life Sunday, September 17, 2006 at Hart County Hospital.
Born May 14, 1922 in Liberty, SC, he was the son of the late Bert Vollrath and Rosa Lee Lockaby Vollrath.He was retired from U.S. Army Corp of Engineers as a Powerhouse operator. He was a member of Hartwell First United Methodist Church, a member and former teacher of the Wallace White Sunday School Class, a former usher and choir member.He was a member and a Past Commander of Hartwell American Legion Post 109, member of Hartwell VFW, Past President and a founding member of the Savannah Valley Shrine Club, member of Nancy Hart Masonic Lodge #690 and a member of Hartwell Kiwanis Club where he served as a former secretary. He was a member and former President of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, member and former President of American Federation of Federal Employees, former scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troup #33, where he received the Silver Beaver award.He was also an Amateur Radio Operator.He was a U. S. Army WWII Air Corp Veteran and served in the Pacific Theater in Radio Communications then after the war he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and Civil Air Patrol.He loved life, he loved his country and his family, but most of all he loved his Lord.
His survivors include:Son, Harvey Vollrath and his wife Connie of Hartwell, GA; Daughter, Suzanne Keogh and her husband Jim of Clemson, SC; Five grandchildren, Kim Powell, Valerie Gifford, Jim Vollrath, John Vollrath and Kate Keogh;and three great grandchildren, Sidney Skelton, Peyton Powell and Olivia Gifford also survives.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hartwell First United Methodist Church.Dr. R. Allen Stewart and Rev. Jim Winn will officiate.Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 prior to the service.
The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6 to 8:00 p.m.The family is at the home of Harvey and Connie Vollrath, 256 Tahoe Drive, Hartwell.Memorials may be made to Hartwell First United Methodist Church, 200 E.
