Obituary
Mr. Oren Don Sanders, 85, of Old Mt. Olivet Road, Hartwell, passed away at Hartwell Health & Rehabilitation surrounded by family and friends who loved him.
He was the son of the late T. W. Sanders and Hailey Phillips Sanders. He was preceded in death by his brother Early Sanders.Mr. Sanders is survived by his wife Leona Richardson Sanders; his daughter and son-in-law Donna and Clyde McDowell of Hartwell; one twin sister: Dot S. Easterling of Jekyll Island, GA; one sister-in-law: Evelyn Sanders; two grandchildren: Laura (Scott) Dickerson of Hartwell, Reed McDowell of Astoria, NY; and three great grandchildren: Chandler, Savannah and Parker Dickerson of Hartwell.
Don received Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior as an adult while attending Calvary Baptist Church in Hartwell where he and Leona helped run the bus ministry in the 1970's.For many years he and Leona attended Flat Shoals Baptist Church where they were active in all church activities.He also was a founding member of The Way Church of Hartwell, where he attended The Way Makers Sunday School Class.
He worked many jobs in his life including Gold Kist and Amerigas of Hartwell.He was an expert carpenter and after the lake backed up developed Sanders Mobile Home Park along with his brother Early.
Don was a veteran of the US Army serving his country at Fort Mead, MD and Fort Knox, KY.
An avid gardener, and a friend to all, he devoted many hours to helping the elderly.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell with Rev. Riley Shelton, Rev. Ricky Hix and Rev. Lee Smith officiating.Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.
The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.The family will be at the home of Clyde and Donna McDowell, 2079 Mt. Olivet Road, Hartwell.Flowers optional, memorials may be made to The Way Church, 1332 Airline Goldmine Road, Canon, GA 30520.
