George Douglas "Doug" Harvey, age 72, of Grady School Road, Canon, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens.
Born August 24, 1947, in Stephens County, he was the son of the late Garvin "Peewee" Harvey and Jennell Alexander Oliver. He was a veteran of the US Army and worked as a truck driver with AutoZone for 16 years and retired from Columbia Farms. He attended Bowersville Church of God and was a member of the Lavonia VFW Post 5897. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant brother: Donald Harvey; and grandchildren: Lukas Berryman and Katie Williford.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years: Ruth Blakely Harvey; children: Tamara Williford (Eric), Kirk Harvey (Towana), and Amanda Harvey Mathis (David); brothers: Ricky Oliver (Tammy) and Randy Oliver (Sandy); sister: Annette Acuff (Walter); twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held, with military honors, at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2020 at the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home of Lavonia with Rev. Gettis Allen and Rev. Mickey Umbehant officiating. Cremation will follow the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Flowers are optional or memorial donations may be made to Bowersville Church of God.
