Born on April 11, 1960, in Dekalb County, Doug was the son of the late Hoke and Sondra Ausburn Stephens. Doug proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy, where he was able to see the world as an aircraft carrier firefighter. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to Atlanta Gas Light for more than 36 years. As the Supervisor of Field Operations, he always enjoyed working with his coworkers, and loved his job.

Doug was an avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed supporting Georgia Tech and the Atlanta Falcons. He served as an ambassador for Atlanta Motor Speedway. However, his happiest times were spending time with his family. Doug's positive spirit and loving personality never failed to support his family and uplift their hearts. Doug was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 41 years, Kim Stephens. Doug was a proud and loving father to his children: Michael (Lindsay) Stephens, Sarah (Jay) Harper, and Andrew (Haden) Stephens. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Cambrilyn (Jason Jefferson) Scofield, Lexie Stephens, Callie Stephens, Caleb Stephens, Tate Stephens, Neely Stephens, Kate Harper, Addie Harper, and Amelia Harper. Doug is also survived by his siblings Kelly (Tony) Cown, Joel (Rhonda) Stephens, and Donnie Stephens, his mother-in-law, Carolyn Barrett, brother-in-law, Chris (Margina) Barrett, along with several nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ricky Stephens.
