Mrs. Ellen Cheek O'Neal, 87, of 12 Cobb Village Dr., Royston, formerly of Hartwell, died Monday, May 21 at The Gables, Royston GA.
She was born in Bowersville, GA on April 7, 1920 and lived in Hart County for all of her life.She was the daughter of the late Hubert Cheek Sr. and Myra Garner Cheek of Bowersville.She was a graduate of the University of Georgia, where she received her bachelor's degree in English education and her masters and six year in guidance and counseling.She was a lifelong educator having worked for 30 years as an English teacher and counselor at the Hart Co. High School.In the role as counselor at the Hart County High School, she worked diligently to help her students continue their education after their High School graduation and to fulfill their true potentials. To the citizens of Hart County she may be best remembered for this role that she played in many of their lives.She also worked as a program director at Piedmont College in Demorest for 9 years.She was a member of the Hartwell First United Methodist Church and the Hart County Retired Teachers and was actively involved in all aspects of community life in Hart County.
Survivors include her daughter: Janie O'Neal Rodgers and her husband Tom of Athens; a son: Mike O'Neal and his wife Chris of Lula; grandchildren: Scott Rodgers, Jim Rodgers, Nickole O'Neal Saladin and Andrea O'Neal Stell; great-grandchildren: Blythe Rodgers, Luke Rodgers, Bethany Rodgers, John-Thomas Rodgers, Georgia Rodgers, Cooper Saladin and Cash Saladin also survive.She was preceded in death by her husband Tim O'Neal; a brother: Hubert "Bud" Cheek Jr, and a sister: Jane Cheek Jerkins.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 24 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hartwell First United Methodist Church with Dr. R. Allen Stewart and Rev. Jim Winn officiating.Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.
The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home ~ Hartwell Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night.Memorials may be made to the Hartwell First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 200 E. Howell St, Hartwell, GA30643.
Ellen Cheek O'Neal was very much loved and respected through out Hart County community and she will be missed by her family and many friends.
