Obituary

Ethel Eisele Carter, 98, a 40-year resident of Hartwell, Ga., widow of the late Richard E. Carter, died Feb. 7, 2007.

Born April 1, 1908 in Frankfurt, Germany, she was the daughter of U.S. citizens living in Germany, the late George H. and Lucilla (Smith) Eisele. Several years after her mother's death, and as WW I approached, she, her sisters and father traveled by ship to the U.S., arriving at Ellis Island, N.Y. on Oct. 31, 1916. She made a career with the Bell Telephone Company, a predecessor of Verizon Communications, retiring in the mid-1960s. She and her husband then moved from New Jersey to Hartwell. An active member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Hartwell, she served as treasurer for over 20 years, and was a longtime member of the Altar Guild. She loved the outdoors and was still riding her lawn mower, tending to her flowers, or pruning her many trees and bushes, well into her late 80s.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by four sisters and two half-brothers. She is survived by seven nieces and seven nephews.

Memorial services will be Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Cass Daly and the Rev. Herschel Atkinson officiating. Burial will be at St. Andrew's Memorial Garden.
