Mrs. Evelyn Bailey Hakes of Lavonia, GA, a former resident of Ischua, New York and DeLand Florida passed away Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Born January 16, 1921, in Thorndale, Ontario to William and Louise Bailey, family moving to Ischua, New York in 1928. In 1944 she married William C. Hakes of Arcade, New York.
Mrs. Hakes had been employed as a Receptionist and Insurance Clerk for Meadow Gold Dairies of Florida, a division of the Beatrice Foods Company in Orange City, FL and as a Customer Representative for the Daytona Beach News Journal in DeLand, FL prior to her retirement and moving to Trenton, SC and later to Lavonia, GA.
She loved nature, flowers, and music and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Mrs. Hakes was a graduate of Ten Broeck Academy, Franklinville, NY in 1938. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Trenton, SC.
Surviving are a son, Clair D. Hakes of Trenton, SC and a daughter, Mrs. Melanie Oliver of Lavonia, GA, several grandchildren and great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hakes in 1955 and 3 brothers, Adam Bailey in 1982, William D. & his wife Roberta Bailey in 2005 and Francis D. Bailey in 2006.
There will be a Memorial Service at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2012 with Rev. Glenn Petty officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Interment will be in Mt. Prospect Cemetery in Franklinville, NY.
