HARTWELL, Georgia-- Fern Angeline Walker, 91, of Hartwell, passed away on Monday, July 6, 2009, at her home, surrounded by her husband and family. Pastor Sam Dulaney will officiate her services, and memorials may be directed to the church. Burial will be in Nancy Hart Cemetery.
Fern Mickens was born on April 1, 1918 In Toledo, Ohio. She was the 3rd child of William and Rose Mickens, following her brother Howard and sister Alice. She married her high school sweetheart, Arden C. Walker, on November 4, 1939, in Angola, Indiana. After almost 70 years of marriage, Fern's eyes still twinkled like a school girl whenever Arden told stories of their courting days.
Prior to beginning a family, Fern graduated from business school and was employed by B.R. Baker in Toledo. After her family was raised, she worked for Younkers in Sioux City, Iowa. She figured payroll for both companies with accuracy to the penny.
Fern's primary role in life was as a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She had a warm welcoming home filled with good smells from her oven. Fern had a broad assortment of interests and talents. She enjoyed fishing and boating, gardening, traveling, crocheting, baking, holidays, antiquing, listening to Perry Como, playing the piano, writing letters, and visiting with friends and family. As a young woman, she was an active member of Alexis Congregational Church in Toledo, where she sang duets with her sister. Since moving to Hartwell in 1982, Fern and her husband worshipped with Reed Creek Baptist Church, and she was a member of Golden Agers. Fern was also a 50+ year member of the Eastern Star Nancy Hart Chapter. Fern's faith, strong sense of duty, devotion to family, and habits of daily good deeds made her an inspiration to many.
Fern will be deeply missed by her husband and son, Ron Walker, of Hartwell; daughter Ruth and her husband Clyde Evans of Muscatine, Iowa; son John and his wife Kathy Walker of Ormond Beach, Florida; son David and his wife Cherry Walker of Talbott, Tennessee; grandchildren Jeffry Evans, Barbara Townsend, Alan Evans, Jennifer Reiland, Laura Evans, Christine Barge, Neil Walker, Summer Rennick, Brandi Smith, Michael Walker, Bryan Walker, and Adra Moore; great-grandchildren Elle, Olivia, Noah, Landon, Mya, Reagan, Ryan, Christian, Ella, Mycah, Seth, Jamie, Tanner, Abby, Ali Jean, Sidney, Beckett, and Brandon; and many nieces and nephews.
