Fred L. Sokol, 82, a lifelong resident of Hartwell died Monday, July 23, 2012 at his home.
He was born November 18, 1929, son of the late Charles & Rosalie Bates Sokol.He was preceded in death by a step-son, Vernon Turpin, brothers, Charles Sokol and George Sokol.He graduated from Hart County High School in 1946.Fred began his employment with Georgia Power June 2, 1952 and retired April 30, 1989, after 37 years of dedicated service.He was a US Army Veteran serving 1948-1949, he also served in the National Guard.He was a charter member of the Hart County Jaycees, helping organize the Hart County Club; served in general offices and committees, former member of the Lions Club, Boy Scout Leader, Chairman of the American Heart Fund, Volunteer in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, Member of the Hart County Republican Party, Citizens of Georgia Power, Athens Ambassadors, and Hartwell First United Methodist Church.Fred is survived by his loving wife of over 41 years, Morene J. Sokol; a son, Gene Sokol and his wife, Tammy; grandson, Christopher Sokol; granddaughters: Melissa Turpin, Victoria & Brian Carpenter; great-grandson, Nick Turpin, daughter-in-law, Cindy Hensley; sister, Melba Seymour of Augusta, GA; sisters-in-law: Bobbie Sokol of Anderson, SC, and Frances Sokol of Hartwell.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Hartwell First United Methodist Church with Dr. R. Allen Stewart and Rev. Richard Hoard officiating.A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.The Georgia Power Ambassadors will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night.The family is at the home.
