Mr. George Martin Knox, age 90, of Martin, died Monday, December 15, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born September 3, 1924, in Martin, he was the son of the late Will and Eula (Martin) Knox. He attended Line Elementary and graduated from Lavonia High School in 1942. He attended Abraham Baldwin College for one year before joining the U.S. Navy. During his service, he worked on propellers and jets, was a supervisor of maintenance control and various other areas, including flight line, plane captain, trouble shooting and quality assurance operation. He retired in 1973 as a Chief Petty Officer. He attended Truett McConnell a year before going to Piedmont College, where he graduated with a Bachelors of Art Degree in 1978. He owned and operated a cattle farm. He was a member and Sunday School teacher at Clarks Creek Baptist Church. He was a member of the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce, the American Legion, VFW Post 5897, Farm Bureau, and a former member of the Elks Club.
He is survived by four children: Patty Knox Clark of Virginia Beach, VA, George Knox, Jr. of Kauai, HI, Samuel Knox of Honolulu, HI, and Kebin Knox of Seattle, WA; a step-daughter: Penny Hankins; two grandsons: Steven Thomas Clark, Jr. & wife Megan and Granger Martin Clark & fiancé Christina Macfarlane; great-grandchildren: Elizabeth and Cameron Clark; brother: Tom Knox of St. Jose, FL; and a number of step-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Billy Knox and a sister: Mary White.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 20, 2014 at Clarks Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Britt Ginn officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity or to Clarks Creek Baptist Church, 2881 Clarks Creek Road, Martin, GA 30557.
