Mrs. Gladys Cawthon Gibson, age 89, of Lavonia, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2019 at her home following an extended illness.
Born May 7, 1930, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Buren and Selma (Swift) Cawthon. She retired from Hartwell Garment Company as a seamstress. She was a faithful member of the East Lavonia Church of God, where she has served as the leader of the women's ministry, children's Sunday School teacher, and Bible School teacher. Gladys and her husband, Junior, loved to sing and share the gospel in church and led a nursing home ministry at Hartwell Healthcare and Brown Health & Rehab. She will be remembered for her Christian love and as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years: Ernest Gibson, Jr.; daughter & son-in-law: Tammy Lynn & Randy Melton; sons & daughters-in-law: Larry Joe & Janice Gibson and Rickey & Gretchen Gibson; brother: Howard Cawthon; grandchildren: Eric Gibson, Jennifer Clark, Niki Stinson, Natalie Geiger, Christy Gibson, Brittany Gibson, Collis Gibson, Destiny Gibson, Jacob Gibson, Bradley Gibson, Brandon Gibson, Lauren Reeves, Tiffany McCoy, Hannah Shaw, Haley Shaw, Justin Melton, Jonathon Melton, and Jared Melton; and twenty great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son: Mark Gibson; sister: Agnes Mitchell Richardson; and brothers: John Henry Cawthon, Jimmy Cawthon, J. B. Cawthon, and Frankie Lee Cawthon.
The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home of Lavonia with Rev. Hubert Carter and Rev. Tommy Childress officiating. Burial will follow in Franklin Memorial Gardens – North with Rev. Eddie Umbehant and Rev. Kendall Scott officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. At other hours the family will be at the home.
