Mrs. Hazel Virginia (York) Newberry, age 101, born in Atlanta September 3, 1911, passed away August 2, 2013. She was the wife of the late James Douglas Newberry.She was the daughter of the late Henry Grady and Clara Belle Osborn Matthews York.
She worked at Southern Bell Telephone Company in 1934 for several years. She lived in Atlanta most of her life and moved to Hartwell where she resided at Lake Pointe Assisted Living.
Survivors include two sons: James Newberry (Karen) and Harvey Newberry (Connie); two daughters: Sue Bacchus, Claire Seagraves (Keith); son-in-law: John Gwin; grandchildren: Mark Eskew (Wendy), Jeff Eskew (Ellie), Mary Jane Atsalis, Gregg Bacchus (Christi), Julia Lynn-Elias (Michael), Tammy Newberry Dulaney (Jeff), Stephen Newberry, Kelly Gwin Seagraves (EG), Brad Gwin (Stacey), Joy Gwin Hindman and Kerry McElroy (Chris); great grandchildren: Harrison Eskew (Sarah), Megan Eskew Nicholson (Eliott), Abbey Eskew, Chelsea Owens, Claire Eskew, Jack Eskew, Grace Eskew, Michelle Davis (Zeb), Kimberly Patrick (John), Madeline Gwin, Greggory Gwin, Jill Hindman, Lexie McElroy and Amber Seagraves; great great grandchildren: Hazel Jayn Estrada, Aidan Davis and William Patrick. She was preceded in death by daughter Virginia Ann Gwin.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 5, 2013 at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home. Burial will be at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday beginning at 1:00 p.m. until the funeral time. Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
