Obituary

Mr. Herbert Walker Maret, 88, of Cleveland Ave, Hartwell, died Monday, July 29 at St. Mary's Hospital, Athens GA.

Born on June 30, 1925 in Hartwell GA, he was the son of the late Wallace W. Maret and Mary Elizabeth Wilson Maret.Mr. Maret was co-owner of Hartwell Feed and Elevator and Maret Grain and Milling.He was a former member of the Hart County Board of Health and was a former city councilman, where he served for 37 years from 1968 to 2005.He also served as Mayor Pro tem and chairman of each of the city's departments. Herbert was a member of the Hartwell Lions Club for 60 years, where he had served as treasurer for a number of those years and received a Melvin Jones Award for his outstanding service.He also received the Hartwell Rotary Club's Four Way Test Award for community service.Mr. Maret has served as a Greeter for a number of years for the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell.Herbert was a member of the Hartwell First Baptist Church, where he was a Trustee and Deacon, former chairman of the Board of Deacons, member of the Sanctuary Building Committee that oversaw its construction in 1965 and was the Secretary of the adult Sunday School Department.Mr. Maret was a WW II U S Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Polly Milford Maret; a daughter, Judy Maret Brooks and her husband William of Waycross GA; two grandsons, Jason Brooks and his wife Terry of Oakland NJ and Matthew Brooks and his wife Emily of Sandy Springs GA; three great-grandchildren: Conner Brooks, Harrison Brooks and Walker Brooks also survive.Mr. Maret was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Katharine Polly Brooks; three brothers, Monroe Maret, Hugh Maret and Harold Maret and two sisters, Montez Fleming and Kate Vassar.

Funeral services will be Thursday, August 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hartwell First Baptist Church with Dr. Hugh Kirby and Dr. Steve Albanese officiating.Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park with Rev. Carter Tucker officiating.

The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hartwell First Baptist Church, 81 E. Howell Street, Hartwell GA30643.
