Howard Eugene "Red" Herring, age 75, of Martin, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at his home.
Born May 24, 1944, in Lavonia, he was the son of the late Eugene and Nettie Lou (Wood) Herring. He was veteran of the US Army, where he served in Korea during the Vietnam War. He retired as a maintenance worker with Milliken & Company's Avalon Plant. Mr. Herring was a member of the Lavonia VFW Post 5897 and Shoal Creek Baptist Church.
He is survived by brothers & sisters-in-law: Charles & Juanita Herring, Herman & Jill Herring, and Billy & Gloria Herring; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: James Herring, Harold Herring, Julian Herring, and Hugh Calvin Herring; and sisters: Sarah Jernigan and Nathel Alewine.
The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home of Lavonia with the Rev. Dr. Joe Renfro officiating. Burial will follow in Shoal Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
