Imogene Bowen Chappelear, age 87, of Lavonia, passed away Sunday, November 14, 2021 at her home.
Born September 12, 1934 in Hartwell, she was the daughter of the late William Leland Bowen and Beulah Ann Victoria (Ledford) Bowen. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Before retirement she worked in the textile industry. She loved working in her yard and was renowned for baking the best cakes and pies, which she loved sharing with her family and friends. Mrs. Chappelear was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Neil McRoss Chappelear; her son: Gregory McRoss Chappelear; sister: Doris Bowen; brother: Dallas Edward Bowen, Sr.; infant brothers: Stewart, Hugh, Robert, and Elbert Bowen; in-laws: Kenneth, Dale, Bobby & Mike Chappelear, Buck Rutherford, Charles Elliott, Ray Howard, Bob & Rebecca Dowis, Jean Scott, Nelson & Arthurlene Ethridge, Debbie Johnson, Catherine Chappelear, Rayford & Ola Mae Marett, Guy & Lucille Griffen, Jimmy & Grace Mitchell, Jack & Doreen Patsolic, George & Eldred Barker, Milford & Mildred Marett, Betty Jane King Bowen; nieces: Connin Hayes & Edna Victoria Thompson-Fagan; nephews: Jerry Hayes, Sr., Connie Thompson, & John Fagan.
She is survived by two nieces: Angie McLane (David) and Sharon Swint (David); four great nephews: Kevin Thompson (Crystal), Brian Thompson, Jerry Hayes (Chrisy), and Robert Hayes; five great-great nieces: Scarlot Grace Thompson, Savannah McLane, Avia Hayes Shelton, Bosia Hayes Loper, and Abby Habel; three great-great nephews: Elijah Thompson, John Thomas McLane, and Stewart Habel; sisters-in-law: Bonnie Elliott, Jane King, Tammy Chappelear, Ellen Sposato, Marion Smith, Glenda Hix, Gloria Ferguson, & Billie Howard; and brothers-in-law Dan Johnson, Harry Marett & Dean Hix.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2021 at the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home of Lavonia with Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Macedonia United Methodist Church Cemetery. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Wayne Chitwood, Jeff Ethridge, Harry Marett, Kevin Smith, Scotty Smith, and Tanner Williams.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 1:30 p.m. until the service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Macedonia Church Cemetery Fund, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
