Mr. Julian Lyle Roland, 95, of Hartwell, Georgia, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010, after a short illness.
He was born January 16, 1916 in Bushnell, FL, to the late Allen Malone Roland and Alma Elizabeth Wise Roland of Bushnell, Fla. Mr. Roland began his career in Florida with Greyhound Bus Lines, continued in Chicago, Ill. with the National Bus Transportation Association where he designed a nationwide baggage handling system and then joined E.T. Barwick Industries in Dalton, GA. He retired in Hartwell, Georgia to be near his daughter and grandchildren and to enjoy his two passions - gardening and genealogy. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hartwell. He was a lifelong Gator fan, having attended the University of Florida and Stetson University.
He is survived by his three daughters, Nancy R. (Sam) Grizzle of Hartwell, GA, Mary R. (Fred) Welker, III of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Allyn R. (James) Jenkins of Athens, GA. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Lisa G. (Darren) Hunt of Marietta, GA, Sam C. (Amy) Grizzle, Jr. of Daniel Island, S.C., Rebecca Grizzle of Savannah, GA, Dr. Amy G. (Brad) David of Pooler, GA, Jennifer W. (Douglas) Peacock of Fort Lauderdale, Fred Welker, IV, of Greensboro, N.C., Cecilia W. Jenkins of Athens, GA and S. Kelly Jenkins, USCG Gallatin, Charleston, S.C.; He cherished the addition of seven great grandchildren in recent years. Also survives is nephew, Michael Yow of Philadelphia, PA; and niece, Ann E. Yow-Dyson of Bellingham, WA and three grand nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances Elizabeth O'Connor Roland; and his sister, Muryl Elizabeth Roland Yow.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at the Hartwell First United Methodist Church.Dr. Allen Stewart will officiate.
