Mr. James Colquit "J.C." Smith, age 84, of Lavonia, died Monday, November 22, 2010 at his home, following an extended illness.
Born February 16, 1926, in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Roy J. and Mary (Canup) Smith. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater at Iwo Jima and in China. During his service he was awarded the Purple Heart. Prior to retiring, he was owner and operator of Smith Barber Shop and J.J. Cattle Ranch both in Lavonia. Mr. Smith was a member of the Lavonia First Baptist Church and the Zach Daniel Sunday School Class.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Jannette (King) Smith; daughter: Sharon Smith; brothers: R.M. Smith, John Smith, Troy Smith, Lewis Smith, Guy Smith, and Rev. Bill Smith; and sisters: Virgie Smith, Blanche Stowe, Venice Isbell, Bird Sosby, Ruth Dawkins, and Margaret Dooley.
He is survived by his daughter & son-in-law: Lori & Chuck Lewis of Lavonia; grandsons: David Roberts & Austin Wood; step-grandson: Cale Lewis; step-great-grandchildren: Landon Lewis & Kellan Jordan; and brother: Calvin Smith.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. At other hours the family will be at their respective homes.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at the Lavonia First Baptist Church with Dr. Larry Finger and Rev. Chris Chitwood officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Lavonia City Cemetery. Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to the Zach Daniel Sunday School Class.
