Mrs. Martha Jane Feltman Carter, 85, of Hartwell, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2023, at the Prisma Health Cottingham House in Seneca, SC.
Born on June 5, 1938, in Hartwell, GA, she was the daughter of the late Luther Benton Feltman and Martha Evelyn Brown Feltman. Mrs. Carter was a former teller for the Bank of Hartwell, co-owner of the Gumlog Wood Company, and a member of the Hartwell First United Methodist Church. She was a dedicated wife and mother and was happily married to Lee E. Carter Jr., for over fifty-nine years. They were married on Lee's 22nd birthday on April 13, 1958, and within three weeks they were headed to California for Lee's assignment with the U.S. Navy. She was an American Red Cross volunteer in a military hospital in Guam, during the height of the Vietnam war. She cared for many wounded service men and assisted in their medical treatment. Upon Lee's retirement after 20 years with the U.S. Navy, Mrs. Carter was also awarded a plaque of gratitude for her unwavering dedication to her husband and to their dedicated service to the United States.
Mrs. Carter was also a talented artist in several venues including painting, needle crafts, scrapbooking, and was an excellent chef. She was a former member of the Pine Tree Garden Club of Hartwell. She loved working in her flower beds and making a warm, inviting home for her family and friends.
Survivors include her two sons: James Steven Carter and Benton Lee "Ben" Carter, both of Hartwell; daughter: Martha Carter Maness (Shannon) of Sanford, NC; brother: Brown Feltman (Sara) of Hartwell; two grandchildren: Shellie Lyn Bell and Dakota Lee Bannister: and two great grandchildren: Camden Bell and Eastyn Bannister.
The family will receive friends Saturday, September 9, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell. Other times the family will be at the home of Steve Carter, 652 Greenway Upholstery Rd, Hartwell, GA.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jane Carter will be Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell with Chaplain Shannon Maness officiating. Burial will be in the Northview Cemetery.
Flowers are optional, and memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 105 W. Park Dr, Ste. C, Athens, GA 30606.
The Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell is in charge of all arrangements.
