Jerome Carson Humphrey, age 71, of Martin, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024, at his home after his battle with cancer. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family, community, and his love of sports.
Born on March 1, 1953, in Stephens County, Jerome was the son of the late Eugene and Irene Vandiver Humphrey. He was a proud graduate of Franklin County High School, Class of 1971, and dedicated much of his career to Columbia Farms as a Hatchery Manager for twenty-one years. For the past eleven years he found much enjoyment in serving Franklin County Schools in the maintenance department, where he enjoyed his coworkers and checking on his daughter and grandbabies. Jerome's passion for sports, especially the Georgia Bulldogs, was evident throughout his life. His enthusiasm shone brightly as he cheered on his children and grandchildren, coached, and refereed Little League games. Additionally, he contributed significantly to many area racetracks, working as a scorekeeper for over forty years. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Jerome leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory. He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Kaye Certain Humphrey; his daughters and sons-in-law, Joy and Josh Holcomb, and Jodi and Tyler Davison; his son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Miki Humphrey; and his adored grandchildren, Seth Holcomb, Luke Holcomb, Averi Davison, Layla Humphrey, Rhett Davison, Calla Humphrey, Zeke Davison, Grayson & Sydney York, Olivia York, and Sarah York. Jerome is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Merita Humphrey; his sister-in-law, Sue Humphrey; and his cousin and partner in crime, Wayne Chitwood. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Jeff Humphrey and Johnny Humphrey.
A funeral service to honor Jerome's life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Rev John Marc Cooling will officiate the service, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 p.m. until the service begins. Flowers are welcome, or donations may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, located at 1333 Pleasant Hill Road, Martin, GA 30557.
