James Grigsby “Jim” Perkins, age 85, of Lavonia, Georgia, passed away at his home on November 4, 2026.
Born May 30, 1941, in Newport News, Virginia, he was the son of Frank Odey Perkins and Mary Ella Hughes. James earned a Bachelor of Science degree and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
James began his career in Washington, D.C., where he helped oversee the opening of the Metro system. He moved to Atlanta in 1973 and helped oversee the opening of the MARTA system, continuing his work as a civil engineer with MARTA until his retirement after 25 years of service.
A kind Southern gentleman with a sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor, James lived with a strong and devoted Christian faith. He was a member of Lavonia First Baptist Church and had a deep interest in history, especially the Civil War and World War II. He was an all-around do-it-yourselfer, with an exceptional talent for woodworking. He was an avid tennis player and skier.
In retirement, James enjoyed day trading, following the stock market, and traveling the world with his wife, Libby. He loved lake life and treasured their evening tradition of sharing a scotch on the dock at six o’clock. Above all, he loved his family. A proud “Papa,” he cherished his children and grandchildren and was their most faithful defender. His beloved dogs, Finn and Darby, held a special place in his heart, and especially Sophie, who has crossed over the rainbow bridge.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Libby” McQueeney Perkins; sons, Daniel Perkins and his wife, Ashley, and Matthew Perkins and his wife, Shari; brother, Frank Perkins; sister, Carol Schenker; and grandchildren, David Perkins, Benjamin Perkins, and Presley James Perkins.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at Lavonia First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the service.
