Obituary

John, F. Rice, age 95, a resident of New Franklin Church Road, Canon, passed away March 11, 2019.
Mr. Rice was born October 29, 1923 in Willimantic, CT. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. He enlisted in the US Navy in July 1942, following his graduation from Windham High School. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal July 1943. He was honorably discharged from the US Navy in December 1945. He was recalled by the Navy in November 1950, during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in May 1953.
Mr. Rice was formerly employed with Eastern Air Lines and subsequently employed with Delta Air lines. He was the Reservation Manager in Delta's Reservation Office in Cincinnati, OH, for 20 years, before returning to Delta's General offices in Atlanta, GA, where he retired October 1, 1985. He and his beloved wife relocated to Canon, GA after his retirement. He was a member of New Franklin Christian Church and a member of the American Legion Post 92 in Lavonia. He was also a 30 year member of the Five Area Fire Department in the New Franklin Community.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Virginia L. Rice; his parents: Trenor A. Rice, Sr. and Edna A. Shorter; sister: Marion J. Rice; and brothers: Trenor A. Rice, Jr. and Robert H. Rice.
He is survived by his sons: John T. Rice of Covington and Jason K. Rice of Richmond, VA; grandchildren: John E. Rice, Jacob T. & Chelsea Rice, Molly L. & Josh Price, Holly V. Rice, and Jamison K. Rice; and great-granddaughter: Maddilyn Price.
The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2019 at New Franklin Christian Church with Minister Carl Beckham officiating. Burial will follow in the Lavonia City – Burgess Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until the service. The family requests that in lieu flowers memorial donations may be made to New Franklin Christian Church.
