Mr. Johnny Lee Bruce, 84, of Hartwell, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at the Hospice of the Upstate in Anderson, SC.
Born on April 4, 1940 in Blakely, GA, he was the son of the late Edgar Bruce and Daisy Honea Bruce. Mr. Bruce was a rural mail carrier with the United States Postal Service with 33 years of service. He was also a member of the Mt. Paran Church in Atlanta, where he served as an usher for more than 30 years, and served on several committees.
Johnny proudly served in the US Army in Vietnam from 1959-1962. He was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne and a trained medic. He was a member of the American Legion Post 109 in Hartwell. Johnny was also an outdoorsman who loved to hunt & fish. He was a former member of the of both the Lake Hartwell Bass Club and the Red Man Tournament Trail. He was also a member of the North Georgia Tres Dias for 35 years, and was a former Rector in 2008.
Survivors include his wife: Sandra M. Bruce of Hartwell; his two children: Edwin Bruce of Canton, GA, and Donna Cloud of Tate, GA; grandchildren: Kellie Lewis of Dawsonville, GA, and Kyle Lewis (Heather) of Flowery Branch, GA; great-grandchildren: Adeline & Victoria Lewis; step-children: Suzanne Mize (Russ) of Hartwell and Jamie Holbrook (Amy) of Asheville, NC; and step-grandchildren: Chantz Mize & Rachel Mize of Hartwell, and Alexander Holbrook of Asheville, NC. Mr. Bruce is preceded in death by his parents and one brother: W.J. Bruce.
The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell. Other times the family will be at the home.
Funeral services for Mr. Johnny Bruce will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell with Rev. Carter Tucker officiating.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Long Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery in Marble Hill, GA, with Rev. Kent Hawkins officiating. The body will lie in state for viewing from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. prior to the graveside.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
The Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell is in charge of all arrangements.
