Obituary

"Honest" Jon David Scott
(June 25, 1955–Sept. 28, 2025)
Jon-of-all-trades, King of the course, and a Damn Good Dawg

After a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer (and yet another disappointing Bulldog loss to Bama), "Honest" Jon David Scott left this world peacefully in the early morning hours on September 28, 2025 at his home in Decatur, GA. At 70 years old, Jon had lived a life so full it required extra innings, overtime, and several miracle comebacks.

Jon was born in Milton, FL in 1955 to the late Roy Harold Scott, Sr. and Vernice Dora Hendrix. He was raised in Elberton, GA and was a member of the ECHS class of '73. In his early adulthood, he served as a fireman, policeman, and deputy of Elbert County.

In the early 80's, Jon settled in Hartwell, GA where he also served in local law enforcement before opening Honest Jon's Pawn Shop on the square in Hartwell. Other entrepreneurial contributions to Hartwell included AAA Bail Bonding, Jon Scott Realty, Big Dawgs Chili Dogs, The Dawg House, and making the best boiled peanuts you'll ever put in your mouth. Most recently, Jon spent his days working at the social hub of the city - Hartwell Chevron - where he enjoyed serving the locals and catching up on the news about town. Through every venture, what never changed was Jon's charisma and ability to connect with everyone. He lived loud, laughed often, and loved all.

When he wasn't chasing his next big idea, he was chasing birdies on the golf course or chasing down another UGA win with a cold drink in hand. If you ever had the pleasure of watching a Dawgs football game with Jon, you were in for a special treat.

Jon is survived by his daughter, Joni Lynne Scott (Ginger) of Avondale Estates; a grandson, Grey Scott, who thought "Pawpaw" hung the moon and, honestly, might've been right; five siblings - Mike Blackston (Louise) of Elberton, Roy Scott of Macon, Estelee Pierce (Gene) of Hartwell, Jimmy Scott of Elberton, Elizabeth Cook (Doug) of Hartwell; and a long list of nieces and nephews.

Jon also leaves behind a legendary crew of friends, golf buddies, tailgaters, and poker night veterans - too many to name, but each one a testament to the way Jon lived: all in, all heart.

Preceding Jon in death are his parents and his eldest brother, William "Bill" Scott, Sr. of Walhalla, SC.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 18th at the Hartwell Golf Club. It will be a drop in from 4pm-7pm with some words and memories to be shared around 5pm. There will be chili dogs, boiled peanuts, and the UGA/Ole Miss game will be on the TV.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to TJ and Friends Cancer Foundation, https://tjandfriendsfoundation.com/ or donations are also being accepted for the Jon Scott Memorial Golf Foundation at, https://jsmgf.betterworld.org/
