Mr. Sanford Kenneth Chitwood, age 78, of Lavonia, passed away Monday, August 5, 2019 at Brookside Assisted Living in Commerce.
Born November 25, 1940 in Banks County, he was the son of the late Fort and Neatie (Norton) Chitwood. He graduated from Lavonia High School in 1959 and was a veteran of the US Air Force. He was a member of the Lavonia First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and member of the building committee. Mr. Chitwood also led the church's greeter ministry and was a member of the Zach Daniel Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years: Patricia "Patsy" (Dowis) Chitwood of Lavonia; son & daughter-in-law: Rev. Chris & Leslie Chitwood of Lavonia; grandchildren: Jonah Chitwood and Kailey Chitwood; brother: James Chitwood; sisters: Dorothy Caudell and Joyce Hill; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: Steve Chitwood, Clifford Chitwood, Charles Chitwood and Virlyn Chitwood; and sister: Francine McDonald.
The funeral service, with military honors, will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at Lavonia First Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Chitwood and Dr. Larry Finger officiating. Burial will follow in Franklin Memorial Gardens – North. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to the Lavonia First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 47, Lavonia, GA 30553 or the American Alzheimer's Association (www. alz.org).
