Jimmy Lalon Farmer, age 80, of the Gumlog Community of Lavonia passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at his home.
Mr. Farmer was born December 10, 1929 in Franklin County. He was the son of the late Lawrence Farmer and Ola Farmer Taylor. His wife Vadis Brady Farmer and daughter Stacey Farmer preceded him in death. He was founder of Gumlog Bar B Q and also a cattle farmer. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church of Lavonia. Mr. Farmer proudly served in the US Army in the 315th Signal Construction Battalion Company C in Germany. He was an avid hunter and fisherman as long as his health permitted.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law: Sherry and Lloyd Bradley of Lavonia; son: Mike Farmer of Lavonia; son and daughter-in-law: Keith and Renee Farmer of Lavonia; four grandchildren: John Bradley and wife, Robin of Skaneateles, NY, Mitch Farmer of Lavonia, Jake Bradley of Atlanta, and Meghann Farmer of Cumming; three great-grandchildren: Cader, Graham, and Nolan Bradley; a special friend in his life: Helen Reed of Lavonia; and two sisters: Sara Whitfield and Dene Farmer both of Lavonia. He was also preceded in death by two brothers: Perry and Edwin Farmer; and two sisters: Diane McBroom and Louise Bristow.
The family will receive friends at the Strickland Funeral Home of Lavonia Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. At other hours the family will be at the home of son, Keith Farmer, Gumlog Road. Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to Poplar Springs Baptist Church Building Fund or to Lavonia First Baptist Church Building Fund.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 30, 2010 at Poplar Springs Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Jason DeFoor, Dr. Larry Finger, and Rev. Richard Bielski. Interment will be in the Lavonia City Cemetery. The employees of Gumlog Bar B Q will serve as honorary escorts. Pallbearers will be Jerry Bird, Kenneth Chitwood, Dennis Spears, Hector Ventura, Dondal Wood, Jerry Brock, Bobby Lott, and Tommy Voyles.
