Mr. Lonnie Cleveland Brooks, age 96, of Lavonia, died Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Heritage Healthcare of Toccoa.
Born May 31, 1917, in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Reeves Perry and Annie Rebecca (York) Brooks. He worked for F. W. Woolworth and J.C. Penny and retired from Wilson's Sporting Goods after many years of service. He was a charter member of the Lavonia Planning Commission and a member of the Lavonia Masonic Lodge #241. Mr. Brooks was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he served, as long as his health permitted, as deacon and president of Emanuel Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law: Marie and Billy Morse of Toccoa; son: Ben Brooks of Buford; sister: Ida Parten of Carnesville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Mary Lee (Crawford) Brooks and a brother: Robert Brooks.
Funeral services will be held 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with Rev. Josh Harvill and Rev. Richard Bielski officiating. Entombment will follow in Franklin Memorial Gardens - North. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour. Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
