Lucy Gill of Lavonia, Georgia, passed away at her home on May 7, 2019. She was born in Washington, Georgia on March 30, 1926, the daughter of the late Albert and Lucy Scott Hopkins.She was predeceased by her husband John T. Gill as well as five of her six brothers.She is survived by her five children and their spouses, eleven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Lucy attended Berry College and the University of Georgia where she met her husband.After their marriage, they resided in Atlanta, GA, and spent eighteen years in Murphy, N.C., before moving to Lavonia, GA in 1968.Throughout her life, she was a devoted and tireless church volunteer, family chef, unconventional card player, crossword enthusiast, mystery reader, and practical joker.In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and concocting games for her adoring grandchildren.She served as President of the Lavonia Pilot Club for many years, worked as a realtor at Gill Realty, taught as a substitute school teacher, and quietly provided for many families and individuals in need.
Her children remember a lifetime of love and care, the many humorous poems she wrote and placed in their school lunch boxes, and her yearly quest for the perfect produce to make the prized family relish.Her grandchildren remember the paradise she created for them during summer and Christmas vacations at her home.She remained vital and active until the end.
Her memory will forever remain strong and fresh for her children:daughters Jane Ford and son-in-law Jerry and Peggy Jordan and son-in-law Morris; sons Tommy and daughter-in-law Pam, David and daughter-in-law Terry, and Edward and daughter-in-law Kim.Her grandchildren are Jordan (Josh) Cavallin, Matthew (Karen) Gill, Jonathan (Joanna) Ford, Gil Jordan, Elizabeth (Adam) Beeble, Andy (Christy) Jordan, Chris Jordan, Ryan (Margaret) Gill, Cameron Gill, Lucy (Jonathan) Cauthen, and Taylor Gill.
Her great-grandchildren are Benjamin and Caroline Gill, Lolly Cavallin, Olivia Jordan, Dylan and Cole Beeble, Evie Ford, and Wells Gill.We thank God for her life on earth and for her eternal rest.
The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2019 at the Lavonia First Baptist Church with Dr. Larry Finger officiating. A private burial will follow in the Lavonia City – Burgess Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the Lavonia First Baptist Church, P.O.
