Lucy B. Shirley passed away at Magnolia Estates in Bogart Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 9:57 a.m. She was preceded in death by husband Max R. Shirley, father and mother: William Morgan (Bill) Buffington and Inez (McGee) Buffington, and two brothers: Sam Harrison Buffington and Joe Glynn Buffington.
Lucy has a daughter and son-in-law: Sylvia and Jack Brock of Duluth; son and daughter-in-law: Dr. Steve and Arlene Shirley of Athens, and grandkids: Patrick and Maria Brock, Katherine Brock, Maggie Shirley, Morgan Shirley, and Matt Shirley.
Lucy lived all of her life in the Shoal Creek Community of Hart County. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church for the first half of her life and taught the Junior Dept. of Sunday School. The second half, she was a member of Lavonia First Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday School director for the Junior Dept. for fifteen years. She was a member of the Margaret Burrell Sunday School Class. In later years she started the Providence Cemetery Fund. Lucy had worked as a textile worker, computer operator, greenhouse operator, and boat storage manager.
Lucy believed… so she tried and trusted… "He will not leave me or forget me. Let your heart not be troubled, He is with us always."
The funeral service will be held Sunday, January 14, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Smith and Dr. John Kipp officiating. Burial will follow in Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.
