Luther Leonard Moore, age 94, of Lavonia, died Friday, March 4, 2016 at Brookdale Assisted Living of Hartwell.
Born October 10, 1921, in Bartow County, he was the son of the late Dee L. and Mattie (Craig) Moore. He was a veteran of the US Army, where he served in India, building the communication lines on the Burma Road, during World War 2. He retired from Southern Bell, as a switchman, after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Lavonia Masonic Lodge and the Lavonia VFW. Mr. Moore was a member of Providence United Methodist Church, where he served on several assorted committees. Everyone knew of Luther's love of gardening; he grew the best tomatoes and never let anyone leave without a basket full. He loved his garden and lived for spring when the ground would warm enough to pull out his trusty tiller. He was always quick with a joke and never left a doctor's office without charming the nurses with a tale or two. He was so happy living in Lavonia, where he never met a stranger.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Laura (Noble) Moore, brother: Jimmy Moore; and sisters: Sarah Dickson and Edna Whire.
He is survived by his son: Gary L. Moore of Jefferson; daughter and son-in-law: Gail M. and Drew Davidson of Atlanta; and four grandchildren: Chris Moore, Michael Moore, Laurie Davidson, and Matthew Davidson.
The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2016 at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Brown officiating. A private burial will follow in Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 451 Shoal Creek Road, Lavonia, GA 30553.
