Obituary

Mr. Luther F. Stewart, Command Sargent Major, U.S. Army retired, 88, of 336 Pierce Brown Rd, Hartwell, died Friday, August 30, 2013 at Hartwell Healthcare Center.

Born on May 25, 1925 in McDonough, GA, he was the son of the late Luther L. Stewart and Blannie Elliott Stewart.Mr. Stewart graduated from McDonough High School, Atlanta Law School where he received a L.L.B. degree in law, also graduated from the Georgia State Police Academy.He was a US Army veteran having served in World War II, the Korean conflict, and the Vietnam War.In World War II, he served with the 13th Airborne Division, European Theatre; in Korea he was with the 425th Army Special Group; and in Vietnam with the 36th Signal Intelligent Detachment. His military awards and decorations include a Combat Infantry Badge, Parachute Wings, Commendation Medals, Twelve service medals, six major campaign stars.He retired from the 81st Army wild Cat Division as a Command Sargent Major.Mr. Stewart served twenty-five years in the State Court, City of Atlanta as Bond Administrator for the City of Atlanta.He then moved to Hart County in 1984 where he operated a cattle farm for seventeen years.He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday school teacher.He was also a member of the Hart County Camp, Gideons International and a Lay speaker for the Gideon's International.

Survivors include a son, Terry J. Stewart of Hartwell; two daughters: Connie Stewart of Hartwell, and Patricia Jones of Jacksonville, FL; special caregiver, Beth Buchanan and her child McKenzie; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Chorine Quick Stewart; four sisters: Bertie Vaugn, Ruth Wyatt, Nannie Louthisa Stewart and Frances Stewart

Funeral services will be Monday, September 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Cross Roads Baptist Church with Rev. Michael McMurray and Rev. Ben Coleman officiating.Burial will be in the Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.

The body is at Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell where the family will receive friends on Sunday night from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.In lieu of flowers, special memorials may be made to Hart County Camp Gideons International, PO Box 59, Hartwell, GA30643.
