Mrs. Maephene (Ford) Edwards, age 92, of Lavonia, died Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at The Clary Center in Toccoa.
Born May 4, 1924, in Lavonia, she was the daughter of the late Henry Martin and Josephine (Grubbs) Ford. She was a member of Lavonia First Baptist Church. She graduated from Lavonia High School and Piedmont College, began teaching school in 1943 and taught for 40 years, she taught at Turnerville, Summerville, Lavonia, Toccoa, Columbus Ohio, Goose Bay Labrador, Canada, Portsmouth NH, Warner Robbins, Honolulu Hawaii Baptist Academy. Did volunteer teaching in Shriner Hospital with burned children from Vietnam, taught at Carnesville and ended her teaching career at Lavonia in 1983.
She was the last living charter member of Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, which was organizes in Hartwell, October 1948. She was a member of Lavonia Chapter of U.D.C., the Garden Club, Chamber of Commerce, Retired Teachers Association, and the Pilot Club.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband: Herman Jones "Lum" Edwards; a sister: Ouida June (Ford) Timms; a brother-in-law: Bobby L. Green; and a close friend: George Knox.
She is survived by her brother & sister-in-law: Dr. Henry Jack Ford & Jenny Long of Athens; sister: Peggy Jim (Ford) Green; brother-in-law: William I. Timms; three nephews: Billy Timms, David Timms & Mike Green; three nieces: Deborah Cox, Katherine Crossan & Nancy Piotrowski; four great nieces: Vivian Ball Greentree, Kayleigh Ford Crossan, Elise Piotrowski & Tracy Green Dove; six great nephews: George Ball, Billy Aaron Green, Bryan Martin Cox, Dave Timms, Duncan Crossan & Chase Piotrowski; and eight great-great nieces and nephews.
The funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Chitwood and Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Franklin Memorial Gardens - North. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. Flowers are optional or donations may be made to Lavonia First Baptist Church P.O. Box 47 Lavonia, GA 30553.
