Maggie Lee (Powell) Rushton, age 79, of Watkinsville, formerly of Lavonia, passed away Monday, April 27, 2020 at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.
Born March 31, 1941, in Saluda County, she was the daughter of the late Elzie B. Powell, Sr. and Velma (Quarles) Powell. She retired from the Centers for Disease Control as a program analyst. She was a member of the Lavonia First United Methodist Church. Maggie was an active member in many community volunteer organizations, including the Lavonia Pilot Club, the Lavonia Women's Club, and Power of Hope.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years: Terry Rushton; sons & daughters-in-law: Greg & Dafina Rushton and Lee & Amelia Rushton; grandchildren: Declan Rushton and Charlotte Grace Rushton; brother: James Powell; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother: E. Bland Powell, Jr.; and sisters: Sara Powell, Doris Doolittle, and Daisy McClain.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2020 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Saluda County, SC. Although the family will not be present, the body will lie in state at the funeral home Wednesday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Lavonia First United Methodist Church, 25 Baker Street, Lavonia, GA 30553 or to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 159 Bethlehem Church Road, Johnston, SC 29832.
