Mrs. Margaret H. Cornelius, 94, of Vero Beach, FL passed away Monday, December 17th, 2018 of natural causes.
Margaret was born January 15th, 1924 in Elberton, Georgia and was the eldest of four daughters of William A. Hill and Josephine E. Hill.Margaret lived her early years in Elberton graduating from Elberton High School in 1941.In 1948, she married William "Bill" Cornelius and they moved to Florida where he worked for Southern Bell Telephone until he retired.
Margaret is survived by two sisters, Mary Jo Grant of Elberton, GA and Patricia Lunsford of Atlanta, GA.Margaret is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill Cornelius, and her sister Virginia D. Atnip of Houston, TX.
Margaret was involved in various groups and organizations in Vero Beach, where they resided for many years.She was a licensed Realtor and worked for Joseph W. Walton, generally referred to as the Colonel, who had the first real estate and insurance office on the island. Margaret worked for him for over 20 years.She was a member of First Baptist Church of Vero Beach.One of her passions was growing flowers in her garden.She spent many hours digging, planting and watering her plants and was fond of showing them off.Margaret loved entertaining in their home where she cooked and had formal dinners.Another passion was gathering with other women who loved to bead.Known as the "beaders" they enjoyed meals, beading, and socializing together.
In her final years, Margaret was cared for by her friend of 34 years, Curtis Flinn.The family is deeply grateful for the compassion and attention that Curtis showed to Margaret in the last days of her life.
Funeral services will be Friday, January 4th, 2019 at Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell located at 305 Cleveland Ave. Hartwell, GA 30643.Family will receive friends and family from 11:00 am to 11:30 am and a funeral service will follow.Interment will follow at Elmhurst Cemetery in Elberton, GA. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
