Dr. Marion Angelo Skelton, 94, of Sugar Hill, GA, formerly of LaGrange, GA, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2023 at the Benton House of Sugar Hill.
Born on July 27, 1928 in Canon, GA, he was the son of the late Ozric Crayton Skelton and Pearl McGarity Skelton. Dr. Skelton received his Associate Degree from Truett-McConnell University, Bachelor Degree from Mercer University, and Masters, Specialist, and Doctorate Degrees from the University of Georgia.
Dr. Skelton taught in multiple schools throughout Hart County and was the principal of Vanna School before becoming the educational consultant in math and science for Northeast Georgia Cooperative Educational Services Agency (CESA). He then relocated to LaGrange and served in the same capacity at West Georgia CESA. He retired after 50 years in education and at the time of his retirement was teaching adult education classes at West Georgia Technical College. Dr. Skelton was a member of the Waypoint Baptist Church in Cumming, GA, and he was a former bi-vocational pastor and a life-long Sunday School teacher well into his 80s. His passions were Sword Drill, teaching the Royal Ambassadors (RA's), and was a gifted gardener, growing over 100 varieties of daffodils, daylilies, and irises. He propagated a unique variety of flower for each grandchild.
Dr. Skelton is survived by his wife of almost 67 years: Frances Sayer Skelton; daughter: Cindy Bryant (Rob) of Cumming, GA; son: Bill Skelton (Amy) of Germantown, MD; and three grandchildren: Bobby Bryant of Atlanta, GA; Hannah Rosier (Dane) of Easley, SC; and Liam Skelton of Germantown, MD. Dr. Skelton is preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Alta Mae Cleveland, Edna Walters, and Reba Dyer.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 1, 2023 beginning 10:00am and again immediately following the funeral service at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell. At other times the family will be at their respective homes. The funeral service for Dr. Skelton will be held at 11:00am in the Chapel with Rev. Ronny Taylor and Mr. Rob Bryant officiating. A private family burial will be in the Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
