Obituary
Mrs. Marvella Dodd Garriss, age 80, of Lavonia, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at her home.
Born August 7, 1937, in Cordele, GA, she was the daughter of the late Glen George Dodd and Lorena Patterson Dodd. After graduating from Sprayberry High School, she worked for Southern Bell until her retirement in 1987. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. While her children were in the home, she remained very active in the Marietta PTA, where she served as co-president of the Marietta Elementary School PTA, and later helped to charter the Marietta Junior High School PTA. As a member of the Marietta First United Methodist Church, she served on the Wedding Committee as a wedding director. After moving to Lavonia Mrs. Garriss was an active member of the Lavonia United Methodist Church, the Lavonia Welcome Neighbors, and the Red Hat Society. She worked for several years as a greeter at Strickland Funeral Home of Lavonia.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years: George W. Garriss of Lavonia; sons & daughters-in-law: Drs. Waldon & Renee Garriss, III of Marietta and Dwayne & Katherine Garriss of Grayson; sister: Jean D. Branch of Lavonia; and grandchildren: Joshua & Lauryn Garriss, Marissa & Blake Beckman, and Ariel Garriss. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister: Cornelia Black.
The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home of Lavonia with Rev. Courtney Umbehant and Rev. John Dallas officiating. The graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Kennesaw Memorial Park in Marietta with Dr. Tom Davis officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lavonia UMC Food for Kids, 25 Baker Street, Lavonia, GA 30553 or to Kindred Hospice, 1100 Sherwood Park Dr NE Ste 120, Gainesville, GA 30501.
