Mary Powell Bell, 95 of Charleston, SC passed away on August 17, 2010.
Mrs. Bell was born October 5, 1914 in Hartwell, GA to Isham and Ida Powell.
After graduation from high school, she attended Cox College and received her BA from Tift College. She furthered her education at the University of Georgia, The Citadel, and the University of South Carolina with a Certificate in Elementary and Secondary Guidance and Counseling.
She taught school and was a guidance counselor for many years in the Charleston area. During her career, Mrs. Bell served and held various offices in the Charleston County Education Association. In 1975, she was part of a team who wrote a model guidebook for Guidance Services in South Carolina middle schools and was a nominee for South Carolina Teacher of the Year. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society of women educators.
She was a member of Ashley River Baptist Church where she was active in many areas including teaching Sunday School for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Judson Bell and her siblings, Carlise Powell Lovett and Morrell Lindsey Powell, Sr.
Mrs. Bell is survived by her brother Horace Powell and wife Louie Dean of Winder, GA. and her sister, Geri DeLoatche and husband, Brantley of Durham, NC.Nephews and nieces Ben Powell and wife, Becky; Susan Powell Braswell and husband, Michael; Lindsey Powell and wife, Frankie; Brantley DeLoatche, Jr. and wife, Helen; Darrell DeLoatche and wife, Susan; Dwayne Bell and wife, Cathy; Thomas Bell and wife, Kelly; and many great nieces and nephews. Special friends Mike and Fran Michael along with many others.
Mary loved meeting and helping people.She will be greatly missed by her family and everyone who knew her.

Visitation will be at Strickland Funeral Home, Hartwell, GA, from 12 – 1:30 pm on Saturday, August 21.The service will follow at 2pm in the chapel.
