Mary McGill Carter of Lavonia, Georgia passed away Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the age of 85. Her final days were spent at home surrounded by many loved ones.

She was the daughter of the late J. T. and Icie Bell Williams McGill.

Mary loved to cook, read, and be with family and friends. She was a member at The Pointe Church of God in Toccoa, GA for the last several years. Prior to moving to Lavonia in 2015, she was a member at Duluth Church of God for 43 years.

After finishing nursing school in 1977, she worked with Dr. Dove, Dr. Bostock, and then Gwinnett Medical Center until her retirement. She made many life-long friends.

Mary was a loving wife to Ernest (Sonny) Carter for 70 years and a loving mother, grandmother, and Granny Mary. She loved them all dearly.

In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by her son Dale Carter (Jane); and daughters Judy Carter Carroll (LeRoy) and Teresa Carter Davis (Gary); grandchildren; Mike Carroll (April), Kevin Carroll (Susan), Josh Davis (Jenny), Nichole Mattox (Craig), Clay Davis (Lauren), Lance Carter (Dawn), Lyndon Carter (Lisa), Jordan Carter; Twenty-two Great-Grandchildren; and Three Great-Great Grandchildren. She is also survived by siblings Linda Browning, J. C. McGill, Ray McGill, Bonnie Norwood, Bobby McGill; and numerous nieces and nephews.

ln addition to her parent's she was proceeded in death by her sister, Viola Standridge Gray, Brother-in-laws, Talmadge Browning, George Standridge and Andy Norwood; Sister-in-laws, Cheryl McGill, Debbie McGill and Denise McGill; infant Great-Granddaughter Elysa Carter. A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at the Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home in Lavonia, Georgia with the Revs. Jerry Chitwood, Chad Smith and Tyrone Hutchinson officiating. Burial will follow in the Lavonia City - Burgess Cemetery. The family is at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home for two hours prior to the service.
