Obituary

Mary Jo Hill Grant, 94, of Elberton passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at her home.

Mary Jo Grant was born in Elberton, GA on March 30, 1926 to William Anderson Hill and Josephine Bailey Hill.She met her husband of 65 years, Jack Grant in Pensacola FL, where they were married.Jack and Mary Jo lived in Pensacola FL, Boston MA and Jacksonville FL before his retirement from the US Navy.At that time, they moved to Elbert County where they raised their family on a farm in the Rock Branch Community.She was a member at the Rock Branch Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher serving at various times with preschool and young married adults.Mary Jo was an excellent seamstress making clothes for herself and her daughters.She put that skill to another use as an associate in the fabric department of the Hartwell, and later, the Elberton Wal-Mart stores.

Survivors include four children, Sheila Grant Glover (Lamont) of Roswell GA, J. Bruce Grant of Toccoa GA, Helen L. Grant of Washington DC, and Harry R. Grant (Genean) of Cedar Hill, TX; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Hill Lunsford of Decatur GA; a sister-in-law, Wilene J. Grant of Elberton; a brother-in-law, John C. Grant (Thelma) of Loganville, GA and numerous other relatives.Also many friends from her church, the staff and residents of Magnolia Estates of Elberton where she resided the last 3 years of her life.Mrs. Grant was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Jack Grant and two sisters: Virginia Atnip and Margaret Cornelius.

Mrs. Grant will lie in state in the Rock Branch Baptist Church Worship Center from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2020, where the family will receive friends prior to her service.

Services celebrating her life will be at 2:00 p.m. in the Worship Center with Pastor Kevin Vaughn officiating.Burial will be in the Rock Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary Jo's name to the Rock Branch Baptist Church Building Fund, 2150 Coldwater Drive, Elberton, GA30635.
