Obituary
Rev. J. Mervin Stamey, 86, of Savannah, GA, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Thomson Health & Rehabilitation Center, Thomson, GA.
Born on April 17, 1925 in Toccoa, GA, Rev. Stamey, a native of Stephens County, was the son of the late Oscar Edward and Isabell Garner Stamey.In 1990, He retired as the Director of Missions for the Savannah Area Home Mission Board of the Georgia Baptist Convention after 17 years.He held pastorates in Alabama and Georgia.He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Savannah.Rev. Stamey graduated from Clemson A & M College in 1950 with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Engineering and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1956 with a B.D. degree in Theology.From 1943 to 1945 he served his country in the United States Army Air Corp. in India and Burma.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Faye Sadler Stamey of the home; two sons: Riley M. Stamey and his wife, Donna of Thomson, GA, and Gerry T. Stamey of Orlando, FL; one brother: Calvin Stamey of Anderson, SC; two sisters: Clara Nell Teasley of Hartwell, GA, and Marie Robertson of Fayetteville, GA; three grandchildren: Leyla Goodsell of Hattisburg, MS, Julie Langham of Thomson, GA, and Gina Swords of Covington, GA; three great grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces. Rev. Stamey was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Carlton Stamey, Fred Stamey, John Stamey, and Leonard Stamey.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Strokes officiating. Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.
The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Friday prior to the service.The family is at their respective homes.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Immanuel Baptist Church, 7375 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.
